Red Carpet // Oscars 2014 - Get the Best Dressed Looks for Less!

Unless you have being living underneath a rock since the weekend, you will know that it has been all about The Oscars - in particular who would appear on the prestigious red carpet best dressed list. I have seen many a best dressed list by fashion websites, fashion critics and bloggers alike, and after you read a few they do all tend to feature the same gowns and can become quite repetitive. I originally was going to create a best dressed list but decided that most of you will probably be tearing your hair out at *another* blog post on this! So instead, this post is going to be a bit different. For years, magazines and website have shown us how to recreate the latest celebrity looks snapped by the paparazzi and garments hot off the runway at fashion week, so I have been scouring the internet to find high street alternatives to recreate the designer gowns featured on The Oscars best dressed list! Who wouldn't want to look like a movie star at a snip of the price of a bespoke designer gown? If you have an event coming up such as a prom, summer ball, wedding or black tie event, these high street dresses are guaranteed to make you look every inch the movie star and channel the best dressed style of Sandra, Lupita and Jennifer!

Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen

Sandra Bullock had one of my favourite looks from the Oscars this year and firmly deserves her place on the best dressed list. Sandra was wearing an elegant navy blue gown with a draped front by Alexander McQueen. With a sweetheart neckline and clever draping pulling in the waist this gown has an ultra feminine shape and looks stunning with Sandra's Hollywood hairstyle. The likelihood of any of us owning an Alexander McQueen gown like this is very unlikely but that doesn't mean you can't steal Sandra's Oscars look. I found the 'Michegan Maxi Dress' from Coast which has very similar design details to the Alexander McQueen version - the only slight variations are in the weight of the fabrics used and that the Coast version doesn't have a train. The Michegan Maxi Dress retails at £160 which is a tiny fraction of what it would cost for the designer version! If you still think that's a bit pricey you can find this Coast dress on ASOS for only £122.50 - so if you do have an event coming up this would be a reasonable price to look like you belong on the red carpet.

Maria Menounos in Johanna Johnson

I think Maria Menounos looks absolutely stunning in this Johanna Johnson gown. It has a really romantic feel to it with the draping in the skirt, little capped sleeves and crystal embellishment across the shoulders and waist. It also makes a nod towards the metallic trend covered in delicate silver beading. With so much detail around the neckline of the dress, Maria's sweet plaited up-do goes perfectly. You can find this Virgo's Lounge 'Raina Maxi Dress with Embellished Shoulder' also on ASOS' website. Although the Virgo's Lounge dress has a plain skirt when compared to Maria's Oscar gown it has uncannily similar beading on the bodice - which is concentrated around the shoulders in beautiful floral embellished patterns. The colour of both dresses are also almost identical as are the shape of the gowns. The Virgo's Lounge alternative costs only £95, which I think is amazing considered the amount of detail put into the dress and it really is a great high street alternative for Maria's Oscar gown!

Lupita Myong'o in Prada

Lupita Nyong'o has been causing a storm on the red carpet this awards season and the Oscars were no exception! Her pastel blue Prada gown has been a firm favourite on everyone's best dressed lists and it was definitely Lupita's night. Even with a daring plunge neckline Lupita looks like a modern day princess and the dainty headband finishes the look perfectly. This pastel blue will be featuring heavily this spring especially after the runaway success of this Oscars look! Lupita's dress took me the longest to find a high street alternative for, most dresses were either plunging and short or high necked and floaty, but I finally came across this Coast 'Goddess Maxi Dress' and to make it even sweeter, it's currently in the sale for £95 down from £160! There are a few sizes left, so if you hurry you can snap up one of the best looks of the night from The Oscars, Coast seems to be the brand to go to for red carpet worthy dresses and this Goddess Maxi Dress is an almost exact copy of Lupita's Prada gown, so hurry before it's gone!

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive

Cate Blanchett looked stunning at the Oscars in this nude coloured Armani Prive dress, I absolutely adore the appliqué flowers that cover the gown and the delicate colour palette goes so well with her pale complexion. It was quite difficult to find a similar dress to Cate's that had both the flowing shape and covered in appliqué flowers but I eventually came across this Needle & Thread Petal Maxi Dress on ASOS. Although the dresses have a resemblance, the Needle and Thread one has a column shaped skirt and has beaded floral designs instead of appliqué petals like on Cate's. Both dresses also have a similar colour palette of nudes and pale metallics, which makes it an ideal style to wear this spring. This dress is one of the more expensive of the red carpet high street alternatives that I found at £250 (though don't forget 10% student discount ;) ) but if you have the money to spare and an upcoming event, you're bound to be on the best dressed list just like Cate.

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior

Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lawrence Oscars 2014, Jennifer Lawrence Christian Dior, Oscars 2014 red carpet, Oscars 2014 best dressed list, Steal red carpet style, celebrity look for less. Coast Roxie Red Maxi Dress

It was no surprise really that Jennifer Lawrence made another appearance on the red carpet in Christian Dior, although compared to last year she was sporting a much sleeker and bolder dress in the form of this bright red figure hugging peplum gown. With slicked back hair and simple accessories, Jennifer just oozes sophistication - apart from when she's falling over that is! Maybe at next years Oscars it will be third time lucky and she will stay on her feet. Now I did find an almost exact dupe of this dress - but I'm afraid it would still cost you an eye-watering £2,075! If you are intrigued to see the dress you can find it here - we can all dream at least! As a gown at that price is out of reach for the majority of us, I carried on looking for a high street alternative for Jennifer's Oscars gown, I thought it would be quite easy due to how simple it is, but it was surprisingly hard to find a red bustier gown - weird. I eventually found the Roxie Maxi Dress by Coast although it is another sale dress so it might not be around for long! This dress is only £95 reduced from £220 and would only be a tiny fraction of the designer version I found! Although this Coast dress isn't as similar to Jennifer's gown as the designer version was, it has a similar shape and also has panelling around the bodice to add a simple design feature akin to the Oscars version.

Sofia Vergara in Roberto Cavalli

Sofia Vergara, Sofia Vergara Oscars 2014, Sofia Vergara Roberto Cavalli, Oscars 2014 red carpet, Oscars 2014 best dressed list, Steal red carpet style, celebrity look for less. Forever unique Mara White Mesh Maxi Dress

Of course the fun doesn't stop at the awards shows, and after the Oscars are the after parties! The red carpet is not the only place to find celebrities whose style you want to recreate for yourself. Sofia Vergara was spotted in this white fishtail Roberto Cavalli gown. Now wearing white can make you look like you are walking down the aisle but Sofia's gown has a  more sexy edge thanks to the metallic cut out detailing and halter neckline - making the gown more red carpet than wedding. Now it was quite hard to find a white fishtail gown without getting into wedding dress territory! But I did find this Forever Unique Mara White Mesh Maxi Dress, even though this high street alternative has a more Grecian and floaty style shape rather than a fishtail skirt, what it does have is a similar cut out halter neckline as well as metallic detailing similar to Sofia's. It will probably be as close as you can get to Sofia's Oscar look without having to look in the bridal section. At £360, this is the most expensive dress that I found and by no means would I suggest purchasing this dress unless you had an occasion for it! But if you are a student you can save 15% - over £50 off the price tag to cushion the blow! If you are not a student Forever Unique still offer 10% off for new customers so you will still be able to save a little extra.

I hope you enjoyed my slightly different take on the typical Oscars best dressed list and hope it proves you can look red carpet worthy and recreate these looks with similar outfits both on the highstreet and online for a much smaller price tag than their designer counterparts! Hopefully it will give you some inspiration for your next big formal event.

Which look for less is your favourite?
