Trend // Art Attack

For decades, designers and fashion houses have taken inspiration from the art world to create their own wearable pieces of art, with collections filled of intricate detailing, geometric patterns and bold colour palettes; paying homage to the art movements of the time such as Art Deco, Minimalism and Pop Art. Art and fashion have always gone hand in hand and this season the lines between the two have truly being blurred to create a hybrid of stand out, daring garments that, in themselves, are works of art that need to be admired. It was inevitable that artistic themes would pop up in the fashion world once again and this season is the time to take risks with your wardrobe and really express your creativity.

The wearable art trend can be split into two styles; one is bright, bold and punchy - which is heavily influenced by the Pop Art movement by using bold shapes and prints in primary colours for maximum impact. Designer collections such as Celine and Prada erred towards the Pop Art side of the trend with bold printed portraits, basic geometric shapes and block colours. A more literal use of art has also been experimented with by using paintbrush style strokes, scribble prints, colour swatches as well as ink blots; these imperfect, accidentally on purpose prints add an amateur style edge to the art trend, almost as if the wearer has used the outfits as their own personal canvas.

The other side of the art trend spectrum is soft, ethereal and delicate - using floaty screen-printed fabrics with washed out watercolours in pastel shades. Versace and Armani were championing the softer side of the art as fashion trend this season matching delicate fabrics with delicate arty prints, reminiscent of  the patterns created whilst washing paintbrushes, patterns full of fluid movement with complimenting faded colours merging together. Whether you are brave enough to go for the stand-out statement pop art pieces or prefer the softer side of the art fashion trend, you can re-create both of these looks right on the highstreet to art attack your wardrobe by using exciting textures, prints and patterns.

This half of the art attack trend is perfect if you want to create a high impact outfit with lots of attitude; whether that will be through mixing contrasting colours or using various geometric prints together. To get the best effect out of the Pop Art trend, stick to primary colours, as well as white and black to accent and outline the colours. If you don't feel like mixing prints with prints, you can keep one segment of your outfit with a arty print and have the rest plain but bright - make sure to make the most out of the colourful trousers and denim on offer at the moment! Zara is the place to go to get the most out of the Art Attack trend, they have numerous garments akin to those seen on the Celine catwalks - covered in brush strokes and scribble prints; as well as abstract portrait drawings. If you are looking for basic garments in bright primary colours to inject some life into your wardrobe turn to Topshop and River Island for bold separate pieces that are ideal for colour blocking.

For the past few months, pastels have been the key colours to wear to ease us out of winter and the Art Attack trend has carried on using pastels and updated it by transferring the colours into beautiful watercolour prints for added texture and movement. Lots of silky fabrics and tailored trousers have been screen printed with ethereal watercolour clouds and brush strokes to create unique and transfixing patterns that add interesting elements to the pastel colourways. Whether it be simple paint strokes or more intricate floral patterns, the watercolour trend is fresh and exciting making it the perfect feminine trend for spring and right through to the warmer, brighter months. Where the pop art trend is more casual, the watercolours trend is ideal to incorporate art elements into outfits for more dressy and formal summer occasions. Ted Baker and Oasis are excellent choices if you want to find some stunning watercolour print dresses; I love the delicate patterns and washed out colours and it injects an extra element of interest into normally plain dresses.

What do you think to the Art Attack trend? Will you be getting creative and injecting some colour and patterns into your wardrobe?

Amie xx
